The online application must be completed by Monday, June 17, 2013, but they encourage you to register immediately so that you will receive updates. Broadcom will also proudly display your name as a nominee on our website at www.societyforscience.org once they receive your registration and the confirmation from your fair. Additionally, once you complete the application you will receive an official Broadcom MASTERS t-shirt and have the option to receive a $10 Walmart gift card, sponsored by Elmer’s.

2012 Broadcom MASTERS Semifinalists Include Three Hawaii Students

Congratulations to the three Hawaii students who were each selected as one of 300 semifinalists in the 2012 Broadcom MASTERS program. This national science fair competition is open to 6th, 7th & 8th grade students demonstrating their mastery of Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering as Rising Stars (MASTERS).

Keanu Dean Pinner, an 8th grader at Hilo Intermediate School, was selected for his project Arsenic in Hawaii’s Hyper-Accumulators: Watercress and Warabi.
Sophie Gabrielle Bender, an 8th grader at Niu Valley Middle School, was selected for her project Main Belt Comets: Water from Space?
Evan T.F. Ebesu, a 7th grader at Hawaii Baptist Academy, was selected for his project Arsenic in Rice.

The names of the 30 finalists will be announced toward the end of August 2012. The national finals for the program is in Washington D.C. where the winner will receive the $25,000 Samueli Education Prize.

To all the parents, mentors, teachers, school administrators, donors, sponsors, and volunteers who made this past 2011–2012 science fair season possible:

The continued success of Hawaii’s student scientists is due to your time, attention, and support. Not only do you contribute to the education of these young minds, you’ve also given them the opportunity to participate in unique experiences with peers and professionals who share common interests and goals.

The 56th Hawai‘i State Science and Engineering Fair is on the horizon for 2013, but judging, mentoring, volunteering, sponsorship and donor support are always welcome and needed for the science fair program to continue. If you would like to participate in any capacity with your time, dollars, or resources, please contact us. Also, feel free to share our website with others who would like to invest in Hawai‘i greatest resource, our keiki.

The Hawai‘i Academy of Science thanks all the hard working individuals and organizations participating in science fair community for making this past season possible. We look forward to working with everyone again as we begin the 2012–2013 science fair season.
