Project Safety Rules - There are many rules regarding safety before and during experimentation. Please guide the student through the ISEF Rules Wizard and review general safety rules before starting a project. In addition, there are rules regarding displays at the fair. See State Fair Handbook for guidelines.

Every school is required to have a Institutional Review Board to review projects involving human subjects. For more information see the HSSEF Handbook or the ISEF Human Subjects rules.

Science Fair Educator Workshops

 

Science Fair workshops are offered between September and November 2011 for schools, complexes and districts throughout the state. Workshops cover rules, forms and procedures for science fairs and are recommended for all interested educators. Contact your school, district or state coordinator to schedule a workshop.

Entering a District Fair

 

All schools are required to enter a district fair before becoming eligible to enter the state fair. If you have any questions regarding your district contact the Hawaii Academy of Science immediately.

Find your district fair director using the District Fair Contact list. The director can help you get in touch with an SRC board member who must review your student's project ideas before they begin work.

You'll also need the correct forms to enter your student(s) into the fair.

School Visitation at HSSEF

 

Teachers and schools are encouraged to bring their students (grades 5 and up) to the Hawai‘i State Science and Engineering Fair and DOE Tech Fair at the Hawai‘i Convention Center on Wednesday, April 4th, 2012.

School visitation is free and open from 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m. For more details and to schedule your group, download a School Visitation Form.

Chevron Poster & Cover Contest

 

Encouraging students to think artistically about science and engineering is the main goal of the Hawai‘i State Science and Engineering Fair Poster and Cover Contest. Any public or private school student, grades 6-12, may submit one self-designed (original) poster. Download the 2012 Poster Contest Guidelines and Entry form.

The first place winner of the 2011 Poster and Cover Contest was Von Dickens Ulsa of Farrington High School. He received $300 and his design, featured below, will be on the cover of the 2012 HSSEF program booklet. His teacher, Tess Pereira, received a $50 gift certificate for art supplies.

The second place winner, Richard Hong of McKinley High School, was awarded $200. His teacher, Sophie Hu, received a $50 gift certificate for art supplies.

The third place winner, Bo-Bae Kim of McKinley High School, won $100. Teacher, Sophie Hu received a $50 gift certificate for art supplies.

Each of the following Honorable Mention winners won $50: Grades 10-12: Jamie Wong, Kamehameha Schools; Grades 8-9: Caytlin Yoshioka, Mililani High School; Grades 6-7: Serena Le, Punahou School.
