About the Expo
For over 65 years, we have hosted the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair. In 2022, we launched the first Hawaii State Elementary STEM Expo. The expo was held virtually due to the ongoing pandemic. It was a huge success! We had over 200 students participate from over 20 different elementary schools across the state. In 2023, we continued with the virtual expo, but in April 2024, we held our first in-person expo! Every elementary school was allowed to send one project to represent their school at the expo. All other participants showcased their projects on our virtual platform. It was so much fun! Students had an opportunity to share their projects with the community and other students. They also had a chance to meet with local organizations, learn about their student programs and the science they do.
We enthusiastically encourage any student with a growing interest in STEM to apply. This is a free event and all students in grades K-5 are welcome to join. Students are welcome to share any STEM related project! Perhaps it was a simple experiment they did at home, something they unexpectedly discovered, or a project the whole class conducted, or some observations they made over time... they are taking their first steps as scientists! This expo gives students an opportunity to share their explorations on a public platform for family, peers, and members of the community to learn what our young keiki are interested in. There will be no formal judging. We will, however, invite silent voters to vote on their favorites for prizes offered by our organization and other sponsoring agencies. Last year, we had a variety of monetary and non-monetary (e.g., STEM kits) awards for individual and classroom projects. Check out our projects from the 2024 Hawaii Elementary STEM Expo.
